During this heightened financial crisis, we should take a step backward to take personal inventory of our life's priorities.

While money is essential to purchase basics such as food, gas, clothing, and shelter, it is not the answer to all our problems. As a matter of fact, many things we value cannot be bought with money.

One of the most cherished is "Time".

We find ourselves short of time to complete daily tasks or to enjoy leisure with our loved ones. Even our children have overloaded schedules with very little playtime. I suppose this is partially due to the goal setting mentality and optimization of time. After all, "Time is Money". We are constantly hassled to keep an eye on the clock.

This brings to mind several Chinese proverbs. I also took the liberty to add some of my own.

You can buy a clock, but you cannot buy yourself time.

You can buy yourself a house, but you cannot buy a home.

You can buy yourself a bed, but you cannot buy peace of mind.

You can buy yourself entertainment, but you cannot buy culture.

You can buy yourself recognition in society, but you cannot buy respect.

You can buy a pint of blood, but you cannot buy life.

You can buy sex, but you cannot buy love.

You can buy yourself a library full of books, but you cannot buy intelligence.

You can buy formal education, but you cannot buy common sense.

You can buy off "friends", but you cannot buy friendship.

You can buy followers, but you cannot buy faithfulness.

With money you can travel all over the world, but still be narrow minded.

With money, you can purchase expensive exercise machines, but you cannot buy a healthy slender body.

You can buy designer jeans or gowns, but you cannot buy good taste.

You can buy a plastic surgeon's deft expertise to cut and tuck your flab and wrinkles, but you cannot buy youth.

You can pay for the best doctor's care and top of the line medications, but you cannot buy good health or immortality.

If you've lost your job, it certainly does not help to be placated with proverbs or provincial sayings. However, we should not panic when life flips us an unexpected Joker card.

It obliges us to look deeper within our souls and once again take stock of who we are as human beings.

Who knows, it may even open up new opportunities that you never could have imagined. Just let your creative juices flow and lead you to unexplored territories without chasing the clock!
